Each year, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) conducts a survey to determine the challenges that chief executive officers of hospitals find to be the most pressing. In 2015, these executives rated financial challenges at the top of their list, ahead of government mandates and patient safety concerns.
ACHE asked survey participants to list 10 specific challenges they were facing and rank their importance in terms of what the CEOs felt were the most critical issues. Nearly 1,000 community hospital executives were invited to participate in the study, with a little more than a third of those responding.
In her comments, ACHE president and CEO Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, said that increasing regulations are becoming a more prominent issue for CEOs, even though financial concerns still rate at the top of the list. She also highlighted that personnel concerns continue to rank highly on the list, coming in fourth for the second consecutive year.
